Abstract:
This dataset includes lighthouses in coastal areas of the United States (including Puerto Rico) that may or
may not be official or active aids for navigation. This dataset is a compilation of lighthouses identified
from various official data sources: Aids to Navigation (ATON), National Geodetic Survey (NGS), National Park
Service (NPS), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Lighthouse focal plane height
measurements are given in feet (FT). Only lighthouses extracted from the ATON database contain verified
focal plane heights, whereas lighthouses from other official sources have unverified focal plane heights.
Purpose:
To support ocean planning activities pursuant to the Executive Order Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the
Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States, the Energy Policy Act, the National
Environmental Policy Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, and the Coastal Zone Management Act.
