Abstract: This layer depicts the commercial Dungeness crab fishing effort expressed as the total number of pots pulled from 2007/08 to 2010/11 crab seasons. The Oregon commercial Dungeness crab fishery targets Dungeness crab using pots over sandy and muddy habitats off the Oregon coast in both state and federal waters between approximately 0-125 fathoms. The layer was developed using the kernel density function in ArcPro. Kernel density estimates were created using the line density spatial analyst tool. Commercial crab logbook pulled pots string data were used to create polylines that met the following criteria:Pulled pot strings that were missing spatial information were removedPulled pot strings that intersected land were removedPulled pot strings that exceeded the fishery depth (125 fathoms) were removedPulled pot strings that did not meet the rule of three unique vessels per 1km grid cell were removedThese filters removed 18% of the pulled pot strings for all seasons combined.The number of pots pulled per string were used as the population field with an output cell size of 1km and a search radius of 1500. Fishery logbook data are recorded on standardized data sheets by fishermen during their fishing operations. The logbooks are later turned over to ODFW for data entry and processing. All logbook data received by ODFW that could be matched with ODFW fish ticket information (i.e. trips) for these crab seasons (07/08 through 10/11) were entered, although logbook submission non-compliance, poor data quality and filtering for confidentiality are contributing factors to this data set representing less than 100% of the landings made during each crab season. Because the data are recorded by many independent sources, ODFW cannot guarantee the accuracy of all logbook data.

Purpose: This layer was developed for large-scale offshore wind energy development planning off of Oregon, and should be used for that purpose only. Use for offshore wind siting or other purposes would require additional analyses of the data.
